Yakisugi , or what is commonly called Shou Sugi Ban, is a traditional Japanese technique where the wood surface is burnt to create a weather-resistant surface. It not only looks stunning but also enhances the wood’s durability by making it more resistant to fire, rot, and insects. It has gained popularity worldwide for its unique aesthetic and practical benefits such as wood siding.
I recently finished a TV area in my basement and incorporated the charred wood siding I had purchased from CFP Woods in Puslinch, Ontario. I purchased the Jaguar color which is black and it had a medium char with a brushed finish. It was made from a species called Western Red Cedar which apparently really chars well. It was fairly easy to install as it could be cut with a regular table saw. I was very pleased with the final appearance. Makes a nice accent piece to my basement.
